3Com Park had been known as Candlestick Park since it opened in April 1960, when the Giants moved from little Seals Stadium in downtown San Francisco. The stadium was renamed 3Com Park in September 1995, when the City of San Francisco and the Forty-Niners, in preparing a bid to host the Super Bowl, needed to find a major corporate sponsor to help fund $35 million in stadium improvements. 3Com stepped up to the plate to answer the call, and the rest is history.

3Com Park is the first stadium named for a high-technology corporation. It is one of 27 stadiums and arenas around the country named for a corporate sponsor.
